In 1904, J.T. Gasaway began meeting in his living room with 17 members from the Red Oak Christian Church for Bible Study.  These 17 charter members chartered their church as Panthersville Christian Church. In 1906 a frame structure for the church was built on Candler Rd., in Decatur, GA. Several ministers served the church from 1904 to 1919 and in 1913 the Elders changed the name to Mount Carmel Christian Church, representing the most prominent geographic feature in the Holy Land.

From 1919 until 1950, W.G. Kelly (Preacher Kelly), called a "prophet from their own people", served as part time minister at Mount Carmel, in addition to involvement in civic, community, political activities and running a Pure Oil franchise.  The frame building was replaced by a brick building in 1928 and was expanded with by two annexes in 1949 and 1953.

In February 1950, Jack Ballard stood before 200 at Mount Carmel and was installed as their first full time minister. The average attendance in 1952 was 250. Rallys, revivals, strong Bible School classes, regular Sunday night youth activities, a strong children's program, women's groups, and the addition of staff, lead to Mount Carmel's relocation to Rainbow Dr. in 1967 on land donated by Lloyd Mathis. By 1969 the membership had grown to 3,700 and Mount Carmel was the largest Christian church in the nation.  In 1972 the new Education Building was dedicated with the establishment of the Mount Carmel Christian School as a self-supporting program from that time to the present. The largest enrollment at Mount Carmel school was during the 1980-1981 schoolyear with 450 enrolled for Kindergarten through the 12th grade.

In July1989 Mount Carmel Christian Church and school moved to the current facility on Old Stone Mountain Rd. In 1991 a softball field and pavilion were built to become a vital part of the community. At the age of 66, Jack Ballard retired from ministry at Mount Carmel following 44 years of service. If you've kept up with the math, from 1919 until 1994 two dedicated and committed men served the congregation at Mount Carmel.

Since that time three men have served as Senior Minister at Mount Carmel Christian Church; Philip Gambil (1994-1998), Randy Snyder (1999-2004) and most recently Seth Wortman (2005-2010). In 2004 Mount Carmel celebrated its 100th Anniversary with Governor Sonny Perdue commending Mount Carmel for her "rich history serving the metro Atlanta community through vibrant church programs, more than 25 different local and international ministries and opening a fully accredited school".

Today Mount Carmel Christian Church and the Mount Carmel Christian School remain a vital part of the community.  Our Vision is to be a congregation of loving Kingdom servants: pursuing God's will, glorifying God through worship, growing disciples in knowledge and faith, caring for those in need, and reaching out to the community, region, and world with the life-changing message of Jesus Christ.
